On September 21, Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer, led by President Stéphane Valeri, welcomed Randolph and Serena Churchill, descendants of Sir Winston Churchill, to the distinguished Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo. The gathering highlighted the unveiling of a new portrait of the former British Prime Minister by artist Michel Aubery. The ceremony, held in a salon dedicated to Churchill's memory within the hotel, underscored his historical bond with the iconic Monte-Carlo venue.
Sir Winston Churchill, celebrated for his role in securing the Allied victory in 1945, had a profound affinity with the Hôtel de Paris, regularly staying there during his visits to Monaco until his last in 1963. Known for his fondness for gaming and Cognac, Churchill’s legacy is deeply interwoven with the hotel’s heritage, notably influencing the Monte-Carlo Casino and the hotel’s prestigious wine cellars.
The event also revisited a significant episode from 1945 when the Hôtel de Paris had reopened a portion of its wine cellar, sealed since 1940 to safeguard its exceptional vintages from wartime threats. Churchill had the privilege of tasting one of the finest pre-war Cognac Grande Champagne and the extraordinary 1811 vintage “Roi de Rome,” preserved meticulously through the years of conflict. The newly unveiled portrait now accompanies historical photographs in the hotel’s salon, celebrating Churchill's enduring impact on the 20th century and his special connection with Monaco.
