Monaco commuters who regularly travel by train to and from Nice or Ventimiglia will need to adjust their schedules as SNCF has announced a halt on nighttime train services. Effective from September 15, train operations will be suspended from 21:00 to 06:00, Sunday through Thursday, until June 26, 2025. This interruption is due to significant infrastructure upgrades, including the reinforcement of the Saint-Laurent tunnel near Eze and extensive renewal of the electrical systems used for the catenaries between Nice and Menton, equipment that has been in place since 1969.
The scheduled works are part of a crucial 20 million euro overhaul aimed at modernizing the aging railway infrastructure, ensuring safety, and improving the efficiency of the services. This major investment reflects SNCF's commitment to maintaining and upgrading its network, a task that is undertaken approximately every 50 years.
While the nighttime closures may inconvenience some travelers, the period is set to be used efficiently for additional enhancements that are easier to accomplish without active train traffic. Commuters affected by the service suspension are advised to seek alternative transportation methods during the affected hours. SNCF's proactive approach promises a more reliable service in the long run, aligning with broader transportation improvement efforts across the region.
