HSH Prince Albert of Monaco has appointed Samuel Vuelta Simon, the current public prosecutor of Toulouse, as the new Secretary of State for Justice, succeeding Sylvie Petit-Leclair, effective September 16. The announcement comes from the Prince’s Palace, marking a significant change in the principality's judicial leadership. Petit-Leclair, who has served since June 2022, will depart her role earlier than anticipated after reported tensions within the administration.
Vuelta Simon, recognized for his expertise in tackling economic and financial crimes, is tasked with enhancing the efficiency, independence, and quality of Monaco’s judicial system. His extensive background in the French judiciary over the past three decades includes roles such as an investigating judge, liaison magistrate in Madrid, and notably as public prosecutor in Bayonne where he combated organized crime and managed the surrender of ETA members. Most recently, he co-led the National Anti-Narcotics Office, underscoring his leadership in critical national security challenges.
The Prince’s Palace lauded Vuelta Simon’s leadership abilities and his potential to implement significant reforms to strengthen Monaco’s judicial framework. As Monaco welcomes Vuelta Simon, the Palace also expressed gratitude towards Petit-Leclair for her contributions during her tenure. This transition highlights Monaco’s continued commitment to maintaining a robust and independent judicial system under new guidance.
