The Monegasque government has announced a significant overhaul of the Pêcheurs car park, situated near the Rock, with plans to expand the facility by adding two new levels designed to accommodate heavy goods vehicles and improve pedestrian flow. This enhancement is part of a broader initiative to modernize the car park's shopping arcade, ensuring it complements the maritime environment seamlessly. The government has earmarked 300,000 euros in the preliminary 2025 budget for feasibility studies of the project, as reported by Monaco-Matin.
The expansion aims to address the increasing demand for parking space, which has been exacerbated by the need to allocate areas for electric charging stations used by the Monaco Bus Company (CAM) in line with Monaco's decarbonisation efforts. The project's ambitions extend to refining the area's functionality and accessibility in collaboration with the Oceanographic Museum, intending to solve the current issues of pedestrian and vehicle movement conflicts.
Despite the project's potential benefits, it has sparked concerns among some National Council members regarding the impact on city traffic, particularly the movement of tourist buses into the city center. Proposals were made to redirect larger buses to the Salines car park at the city's entrance to alleviate congestion and preserve the city center's accessibility. The ongoing discussions highlight the complexities of urban planning in Monaco, balancing the need for modern infrastructure with sustainable and practical urban logistics.
