Monaco has once again affirmed its prominent position in international sports governance during the 18th Conference of European Sports Ministers held in Porto, from October 8-10, 2024. Leading the Principality's delegation, Lionel Beffre, Government Counselor-Minister of the Interior, was elected Vice President of the conference, emphasizing Monaco's dedication to the principles of good governance in sports. This commitment was further highlighted by the ongoing review of Monaco's sports legislation by the National Council, showcasing the country's proactive approach to enhancing sports administration.
The conference, which saw participation from 46 member states of the Council of Europe, as well as Israel, Morocco, the Vatican, and various international sports organizations, served as a platform for Monaco to reinforce its role in shaping global sports policies. The event also marked a significant milestone for Monaco as it was chosen to host the next Ministerial Conference in 2026. This announcement, initially made by Prince Albert II in Strasbourg on October 2, commemorates the 20th anniversary of Monaco's accession to the Council of Europe, underscoring its long-standing and active involvement in the organization.
The selection of Monaco as the venue for the 2026 conference not only highlights the Principality’s influential position but also its capability to lead discussions on the future of sports governance. Since 2016, Monaco's Permanent Representative has presided over the Council of Europe’s Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport (EPAS)'s statutory committee, reinforcing its leadership role. Hosting the upcoming conference will undoubtedly fortify Monaco's influence in international sports governance, positioning it at the heart of pivotal discussions that shape the sector.
