Monaco Reports Notable 34.5% Decrease in Greenhouse Gas Emissions Since 1990

Monaco has achieved a significant milestone in its environmental efforts, reporting a 34.5% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to 1990 levels, according to the 2024 National Inventory Report based on 2022 data. This report, submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), reveals that the total emissions were recorded at 66.53 kt CO2 equivalent. The decrease in emissions has been primarily driven by reduced fuel consumption in the transportation and building sectors, and an increased adoption of biofuels, despite these sectors, along with waste management, remaining the largest contributors to the principality's GHG emissions.

In pursuit of sustainable energy solutions, Monaco has significantly increased its reliance on renewable resources, with 65.5% of its energy consumption in 2022 derived from renewables. Hydroelectric power plays a crucial role, comprising 43% of the total energy consumption. These achievements align with the principality's Climate, Air, and Energy Plan, which targets a 55% reduction in emissions by 2030 from the 1990 baseline.

Furthermore, Monaco is proactively enhancing its climate resilience through initiatives focused on urban renaturation and the development of nature-based solutions. The Environmental Department is spearheading efforts to formulate a long-term low-carbon strategy, aiming to steer Monaco towards carbon neutrality by 2050 while simultaneously tackling the immediate challenges of climate change. These strategic moves underscore Monaco’s commitment to a sustainable and resilient future, reinforcing its role as a leader in environmental stewardship.
