Monaco solemnly marked the 80th anniversary of its liberation from World War II on September 3, with the launch of the 'Monaco Liberated! 3 September – 28 December 1944' exhibition at the Hall of the Ministry of State. The event, inaugurated by the Minister of State in his first official address, showcased his commitment to Monaco and its citizens. The exhibition, which is set to run until January 31, 2025, offers an intricate glimpse into the significant period at the end of 1944, highlighting the pivotal role of American forces in the liberation of Monaco through an array of photographs, documents, and personal accounts.
The commemoration activities commenced with a respectful ceremony at the war memorial, led by HSH Prince Albert, emphasizing the principality’s gratitude towards the American and French forces. The exhibition not only revisits the hardships endured by the Monegasque population, including bombings and shortages but also examines the political challenges and stabilization efforts post-liberation. Noteworthy contributions from figures such as surgeon Dr. Jean Drouhard and resistance fighter Jean Deflassieux are featured, providing personal insights into the historical context.
Further enriching the commemorative events, Monaco introduced a special stamp honoring General Frederick, the commander of the liberating American forces. A series of educational and remembrance activities are planned throughout the year, involving the Monaco Media Library, the Audiovisual Institute, and the Department of Education, Youth, and Sports, aimed at preserving the memory of the liberation and honoring the sacrifices of the Second World War. The exhibition and its associated events serve not only as a tribute but also as an educational resource, continuing until spring 2025.
