Monaco Introduces Lung Cancer Screening for Smokers Over 50 During No Tobacco Month

In a bold move to combat lung cancer, Monaco is launching a targeted screening campaign for residents over 50 who are heavy smokers. This initiative, set to commence in November to coincide with No Tobacco Month, is orchestrated by the Department of Social Affairs and Health. It aims to address the principality's high lung cancer rates, which stand at 119 cases per 100,000 people—one of the highest age-standardized prevalence rates globally. By focusing on early detection and prevention, the government seeks to improve health outcomes for its population.

The program will specifically invite social security beneficiaries who meet the defined criteria to participate in screenings using low-dose lung scans. These high-performance scanners are capable of detecting tumors as small as half a centimeter, significantly reducing the radiation exposure typically associated with such diagnostics. Christophe Robino, the government advisor and Minister for Social Affairs and Health, emphasized the potential of early detection to markedly enhance patient prognosis.

Eligible participants will receive an invitation letter to schedule their screening at the Monaco Screening Centre. This campaign not only aims to encourage smokers to quit but also provides them with critical preventive care. Given that lung cancer predominantly affects older adults, with the highest rates observed among women aged 75-79 and men aged 85-89, this initiative represents a proactive strategy to lower lung cancer incidences through early intervention and potentially save lives by catching the disease in its nascent stages.
