Monaco Hosts European Women's Chess Championships for Fourth Time

Monaco has once again underscored its commitment to promoting women's chess by hosting the distinguished European Women’s Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship from January 10 to 12, 2025. This event marks the fourth occasion the Principality has organized this prestigious tournament, reinforcing its reputation as a center for intellectual and cultural excellence. The competition, held at the Novotel, saw record-breaking participation with 122 players in the Blitz tournament and 144 in the Rapid games, featuring competitors from 26 European countries, including many top-tier players.

In a significant move towards gender equality, the championship doubled its prize money to match that of the European Open Championship. This adjustment highlights Monaco's proactive stance in advocating for gender parity in chess, a sport traditionally dominated by men. The revised prizes awarded €15,200 to the Blitz champion and €31,300 to the Rapid champion, positioning the tournament among the most rewarding women’s chess competitions in Europe.

This year's championship not only showcased exceptional talent—with Poland’s Alexandra Malcewska clinching the Blitz title—but also highlighted Monaco's ongoing commitment to nurturing local talent, with thirteen members of the Monaco Chess Federation participating. The event further enhanced Monaco's image as a sophisticated nexus of sport, culture, and innovation, continuing to draw global attention and affirming its role as a leader in promoting gender equality and cultural engagement.
