In light of two severe road accidents in mid-December, Monaco has intensified its efforts to combat reckless driving, implementing nightly speed and alcohol checks that will persist until January 5. According to Monaco-Matin, Eric Arella, the Director of Public Safety, underscored the necessity of these measures, which are part of a broader campaign to ensure road safety within the Principality. Checks are being conducted at various strategic locations, including country borders and significant inner-city points, engaging both uniformed and undercover officers aimed at deterring and penalizing traffic violations.
The urgency of addressing road safety issues was emphasized by the early findings of this campaign, revealing several instances of drink driving, speeding, and other traffic violations like crossing continuous lines. Arella expressed a commitment to instilling a lasting awareness regarding road safety, indicating that these immediate enforcement actions might be followed by long-term legislative changes to enhance traffic regulations.
To bolster the effectiveness of these measures, the Monegasque government is collaborating with local stakeholders such as taxi services and bar operators, encouraging the promotion of safer transportation alternatives for those who might be impaired. With a collective approach, the authorities are advocating for heightened public cooperation to prevent further accidents, reinforcing the availability of alternatives to ensure that residents and visitors alike make responsible choices when unfit to drive.
