Monaco Confronts Significant Rise in Winter Illnesses Amid Flu Epidemic

Monaco, alongside neighboring areas in the Alpes-Maritimes, is currently experiencing a significant outbreak of winter illnesses, primarily driven by the H1N1 virus. As the principality enters the fourth week of this flu epidemic, health professionals indicate that the peak of the virus has not yet been reached. Despite the availability of vaccines and medications in local pharmacies, both of which are seeing high demand, it’s essential for residents to continue practicing enhanced preventative measures, especially given the concurrent presence of Covid and gastroenteritis, albeit at lower levels compared to previous years.

This season, there has been a noticeable shift in the demographic most affected by the flu, with an increasing number of cases reported among children under 15. This rise is attributed to their still-developing immune systems and the high amount of time spent in communal environments like schools, which facilitate the rapid transmission of viruses. Particularly concerning is the circulation of the B/Victoria strain, which poses a new threat to children who have not been previously exposed to similar viral strains.

Health authorities are stressing the importance of maintaining basic hygiene practices. Regular hand washing, avoiding face touching, minimizing physical contact, and airing out indoor spaces are simple yet crucial steps that can help mitigate the spread of the virus. Additionally, the Monegasque government is actively encouraging vaccination, which is available to all residents at local pharmacies with or without a prescription. Special efforts are also being made to protect the elderly, including personalized letters sent to individuals over the age of 65, reminding them of the resources available to safeguard their health during this challenging period.
