Failed Alcohol Theft Leads to Unexpected Scooter Heist Arrest in Monaco

In a recent incident at Monaco's newly opened Carrefour supermarket located at the port, a man from Nice abandoned his initial plan to steal alcohol due to unexpected security measures. Instead, he shifted focus and stole an electric scooter parked nearby, valued at 600 euros. The perpetrator, later apprehended, claimed he intended to use the scooter's wheel to repair his own, denying any motive to resell the stolen item.

The situation escalated when the man was discovered intoxicated and asleep at the Monaco train station, with a blood alcohol level of 0.9 g/l. His defense fell short as his actions pointed towards a deliberate attempt at theft rather than a necessity-driven act as he claimed. This incident underscores a concerning pattern where individuals from neighboring areas target Monaco for theft, particularly of portable and valuable items like electric scooters.

Reacting to the severity of the crime and the defendant's prior criminal record in France, the Monaco court imposed a five-year ban from the principality and a 15-day prison sentence. This decision aligns with efforts to deter similar incidents, signaling Monaco's stringent stance against theft and its repercussions for offenders. The convicted individual is also slated to address his ongoing legal and personal issues, including his alcohol dependency, in his home country later this year.
