Monaco's Charles Leclerc, the acclaimed Scuderia Ferrari driver, recently initiated a 42-hour karting marathon at Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet, in a touching commemoration of his late friend and mentor, Jules Bianchi. The marathon, a creation of Jules’ father, Philippe Bianchi, over ten years ago, pays homage to the promising French driver whose life tragically ended following a 2014 Japanese Grand Prix accident. Leclerc, visibly emotional, honored his late friend by starting the race, highlighting their profound personal and professional connection.
The event saw participation from 32 teams and 400 drivers, including notable figures like actor Tomer Sisley, Formula 2 racer Isack Hadjar, and singer Benjamin Biolay. Leclerc, referring to Bianchi as his "sporting godfather," expressed deep sentiments about their shared experiences and aspirations in motorsport. The marathon not only serves as a remembrance but also as a significant fundraiser, with all proceeds directed to Archet Hospital in Nice, enhancing its impact beyond the racing community.
Last year's marathon raised 50,000 euros, and this year's event aims to surpass that total. Leclerc's involvement brings additional attention and support to the cause, ensuring that Jules Bianchi's legacy continues to influence and inspire within the racing world and beyond. Through this event, Leclerc and the wider motorsport community celebrate the spirit and memory of Bianchi, fostering a legacy that extends far beyond the tracks.
